Self Reflection and Preservation Series:

Spring 2023

Investigations of “Reflecting on Change” is a series experimenting with internal conversions between conscious and subconscious of reflecting on the past and present. The visuals are created with washy oil layers of gamsol mixed with more opaque lines, which translate into these light reflective spaces. My self-portraits deal with the separateness of myself and my thoughts and surroundings. I use recent and older imagery, to explore the physical, mental, and spatial differences I was experiencing in those moments.  Painting this series became a visual representation of the tension between myself and present reality. The absence of realistic clarity in the empty and open spaces emphasizes the figure contemplating in a state of reflection and subconsciousness. Through opaque and transparent contrasts of color, I explore my experience of retrospective thinking. I focus on the tactility of the paint as a part of the subject regarding the warmth and reminisce. The stillness of soul-searching and reminiscing in finding my own nature. The past, future, and the unknown all coincided in my room, shower, and familiar spaces.
