“Don’t Forget to Say Goodbye”
Vulnerable moments allow our minds to internally assess our relationships with friends and family, and the preservation of one’s own memories. This investigation displays my own treasured moments with my loved ones and creates a space for the viewers to reminisce and reflect on their own intimate memories. The process I developed with repetition and multimedia investigation of these moments, began with old photos and videos, and then progressed to completely recreating the energy and nostalgia of memories as I recollect them and add my own interpretations. When I recount the memories with my own perspective, I am adding my emotions and translating them with color, stroke, and text that add to the experience of the moment. Through the different media I am able to create and display scenes that are nostalgic about family and friends. Intimate moments with friends and family are depicted for example going to the beach with friends and casual reminiscences of peeling potatoes with my grandma. Self Reflection on these moments encourages human connection and reminds us of the beautiful simplicity of the past with loved ones. Experimental processes with ink, letterpress, collage, and painting inform each other. I focus on the tactility of the media as a part of the subject regarding reminisce and memory. Clarity is found through my perspective while the surroundings fade out into unspecific similar to how actual memories behave. Each memory piece, while being different from another, creates the sensation of a freeze frame, embracing the impermanence of memories. The process allows change and growth in itself because the repetition translates the information differently with each media. Feeling and expressing these moments as well as contemplating a sense of comfort, connection and healing.
